Founded in the Middle Ages as a small harbour, Gatteo Mare is the most tourist-oriented village of the Municipality of Gatteo (more than 9,000 inhabitants), which is located at about 10 km from the coast. Gatteo was originally a Roman settlement in the proximity of the ancient “Compitum” – currently San Giovanni in Compito. Besides the Malatesta Castle, the town boasts important historic buildings such as the charming oratory of San Rocco and the parish church of San Lorenzo Martire, dating to the late 13th century. Sant’Angelo is the most populated village and industrial centre. Even the small village of Fiumicino is characterized by a number of industrial and craftsmanship activities.
